Series: Personal projects, collective projects- United by the WIFI

2015

Performance and public actions

In 2015, ETECSA, the company in charge of Telecommunications in Cuba, installed in specific areas of Havana the first wi-fi wireless network replicators for public use. With a cost of 2 cuc per hour of online connection, users could consume the service if they had the devices required for it (laptop, cell phone, tablet). In this way, a wave of people begins to commute daily from distant parts of the city to these places, which did not have the slightest conditions of comfort and privacy. Standing or sitting on the edges of sidewalks, stairs; agglomerated in parks, building porches, etc. the public interested in communicating with relatives, colleagues, who live abroad or anyone who wanted to surf the web, had to use these as virtually their only resource, if you consider the high cost of the few other options that ETECSA has to offer. In this way, this series proposes to the government and to the people who access this service, a group of strategies that, from the irony and sarcasm, are conceived as "solutions" to these absurde problems.

Paper anniversary

When celebrating my first wedding anniversary with an American girl - an anniversary marked by distance - I took advantage of the opening of online communications in Havana with the establishment of a Wi-Fi wireless network in some public spaces; to give a strip dance to my wife through the Imo video call application. Accompanied by a previously hired mariachi duo and a large group of friends, I performed the strip dance in the city corner of L and 23 streets. The public nature of this intervention is justified by the real impossibility of communicating online in a more intimate way.
